Business servers and infrastructure planning

Server procurement starts with the applications and workloads the business needs to run. Record user numbers, application requirements, existing equipment and the expected growth. We discuss physical servers, supporting hardware and deployment requirements in that context. A specification should account for the full installation, including rack space, network connections, power and access for maintenance.

NAS, SAN and storage requirements

Network-attached storage, shared storage and local server disks serve different workloads. Capacity is only one question: access patterns, performance expectations, resilience and management requirements also matter. Identify where critical information lives and who owns it. Backup and restoration requirements need their own plan; a storage purchase by itself is not a verified recovery solution. Agree responsibilities for backup software, monitoring and restore testing.

Migration and integration with the existing environment

A hardware refresh can affect applications, user access and other connected systems. Establish who will manage operating systems, licences, virtual machines and business applications. Documentation and support after deployment

The handover should identify installed equipment, warranty information, configuration ownership and the agreed support scope. Record where authorized administrators obtain the information they need. Do you supply hardware or install customer equipment?

Tell us what has already been selected or purchased. Procurement, installation and integration responsibilities can then be agreed for the project.

Can the migration happen outside working hours?

Scheduling depends on the site, application dependencies and the people required for testing. Identify your acceptable interruption window early so preparation and recovery time can be included.
